Ever see those classes of yoga participants at your favorite resort and wonderful why go on vacation and then get up early to exercise?
The answer can be many things but for most, vacation is a time of renewal and relaxation. Our everyday lives are running from meetings to school to pick up groceries. We head out on to vacation for a reason, and that reason is to slow down.
What many people forget is that our bodies are used to movement. Believe it or not, our bodies like to move all day long and along with that our minds are active during all of this. So what normally happens on vacation is that after 2 or 3 days, after laying on the beach, taking afternoon naps before the evening buffet, and then sitting in the hot tub before bedtime, our bodies are ready for movement again. Even though we want to relax for another 4 to 11 days, we need to activate the body and mind in order to further relax. Sounds crazy, right? Not exactly when we look at the results of yoga.
Most classes of yoga at resorts, unless specified, are for beginners and of course experienced students. Resort Yoga classes take in account that people are trying yoga probably for the first time or that experienced yoga students want a scaled down version while on holiday. For these reasons, it's a good idea to try a class or even one each day.
Now you're probably still asking WHY? Why would I want to take on yoga while I'm trying to relax? The reason is that yoga is a full mind and body workout. A non-vigourous and non-aerobic workout meant to work your muscles and focus your mind. On vacation, our bodies need to have some movement and our minds need to be challenged as well. I don't know about anyone else, but the last resort I went to, the beds were nice and firm. Well firm would be putting it mildly, and each morning when I went to grab some coffee, my lower back reminded me to just how firm the beds were. After a 45 minute yoga class, my back was relaxed and stretched, my mind was focused (even if it was dreaming of a good beach nap and a lunch time buffet) and overall I was feeling refreshed again.
Yoga stretches your muscles but also holding poses allows your mind to focus without interruption. Now don't get us wrong. Yoga isn't just for vacation time, but we'll dive into those reasons in another article. Yoga on vacation gives our bodies the stretch and mind workout it needs and does this in a relaxed environment.
So next time you're heading on vacation, check out the daily yoga (stretch) classes offered at the resort. You'll be surprised how great it feels to be even more relaxed.
